Dr. William J. Mitsch Early Career Award

The American Ecological Engineering Society presents the Dr. William Mitsch Early Career Award to members who, in the early portion of their career, have made significant contributions to the practice, the profession, and to the AEES.  Recipients of this award are emerging leaders in our discipline, whether in academia, private industry, or with government agencies, and will be recognized for their accomplishments within the first 10 years of their career.

2026 Nomination Process

BEFORE SUBMITTING A NOMINATION PACKAGE, PLEASE COMPLETE THE SHORT INTENT TO NOMINATE FORM TO CHECK FOR ELIGIBILITY AND TO AVOID DUPLICATE NOMINATIONS.

Intent to Nominate

Intent to Nominate Form - Deadline to submit form is August 30, 2025. Once you receive confirmation of nominee's eligibility, then you may proceed to assembling and submitting a nomination package.

Eligibility: 

  • Each nomination must be from a current AEES member 

  • The individual nominated must be a current AEES member

  • Self-nominations will not be accepted

​

Once it is determined that your nominee is eligible or has not already been nominated, you will receive confirmation and a link to the final Nomination form and instructions about submitting the nomination package.

Nomination Package


Deadline to submit Nomination Package is October 30, 2025

​

Nomination Package must include:

  1. Completed nomination form (includes Biographical Information) - Provided after nomination is determined to be eligible

  2. Nomination letter (2-page maximum, see below)

  3. Nominee's resume/CV (no page limit) 

  4. Candidate Statement (2-page maximum)

  5. At least two additional supporting letters (2-page maximum)

Criteria for Selection

​

  1. AEES membership for 5 years or more.

  2. Demonstrated contributions to the field of ecological engineering through practice, research, and/or education for between 3 and 10 years, typically following the applicant’s final degree (BS, MS or PhD). Additional consideration will be given to nominees that have followed a non-traditional career path.

  3. Actively support the AEES by serving in leadership positions and/or committees, participating in annual meetings, and/or publishing in JEED.

  4. Show significant potential for sustained contributions to both the profession and the society in the future.

 

The award will be presented at the upcoming AEES Annual Meeting. With the award comes an engraved trophy and free registration to future annual meetings.

Nominees are eligible for 3 years. Eligible nominees who are not selected will be automatically reconsidered for the next two award cycles, but will have to be re-nominated in the fourth year following the year of initial nomination for future consideration. Previous eligible nominations from the last 2 years will be reviewed as is, but if you want to update a nomination package, please email Mike Burchell directly at mike_burchell@ncsu.edu
