About the event

Abstract: Along the US south Atlantic coast, freshwater impoundments are increasingly subject to damage from dike overtopping and salinization from adjacent waters, due to storm events and sea level rise. Coastal impoundments were created to enhance freshwater habitat for wintering waterfowl, which are highly valued by hunters and birders alike. This study provides an approach to prioritize tradeoffs between flood vulnerability and habitat value for twenty-six properties along the Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina coasts. To assess habitat value, we used eBird and National Wetland Inventory data to build predictive models of relative abundance for eight waterfowl species. For flood vulnerability, we summarized expected inundation under current and future conditions at three annual exceedance probabilities, based on the US Army Corps of Engineer’s Southeast Atlantic Coastal Study. Our spatial prioritization approach can be used to prioritize future investments in coastal impoundments, balancing habitat value and increasing costs of flood…
