AEES Fellows Program

The American Ecological Engineering Society bestows Fellow election to members with exemplary qualifications and sustained excellence in contributions to the practice, research, or education in the field of Ecological Engineering. Fellows are leaders in their discipline and accomplished members of our society, have dedicated substantial effort and resources towards the betterment of the discipline, and demonstrate evidence that they will make a positive contribution for the society in their role as a Fellow.

Dr. Greg Jennings, P.E., is Past President (2011-2012) and a proud Lifetime Member of AEES. He served as coordinator of the 2011 Annual Meeting and the 2014 Certified Ecological Designer training in addition to assisting with several other conferences. Greg attended the 2004 AEES Meeting in Fayetteville where he was inspired to focus his academic and practical work toward applying principals of ecological engineering to solving environmental challenges. His 35-year career in teaching, research, and extension at North Carolina State University followed by consulting engineering practice in the Southeast exemplifies his commitment to restoring ecosystem health and resilience.

After growing up on a dairy farm in northern Pennsylvania, Greg studied Agricultural Engineering at Pennsylvania State University and the University of Nebraska before joining the Biological and Agricultural Engineering faculty at NC State University. He taught undergraduate and graduate courses, supervised 30 graduate students, and led the statewide Extension Water Quality program for 23 years. Greg’s early research and extension efforts focused on agricultural best management practices before expanding into ecosystem restoration technology development and implementation. He has taught 160 professional development workshops on stream restoration and practical ecological engineering applications for 3,800 practitioners in North Carolina and surrounding states. Greg continues to support NCSU Extension education programs as a workshop instructor and conference planner.

Over the past decade, Greg has built an ecological engineering consulting business based in Asheville where his team of engineers and scientists has implemented more than 240 ecosystem restoration projects to enhance ecological functions and support community sustainability. He supports non-profit organizations and local governments in planning, designing, and implementing sustainable natural solutions to improve quality of life. Greg is a leader in developing and demonstrating innovative applications of ecological engineering principals to promote natural watershed resilience.
