About the Role

A postdoc position is available in the Altieri Lab (www.altierilab.org) at the University of Florida to conduct applied ecological research in the context of nature-based solutions for coastal resilience. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis with initial review on April 30th and a start dates as early as spring or summer 2025.

The postdoc will join a large interdisciplinary team of faculty, students, and other postdocs based at the University of Florida with expertise in ecology, oceanographic and geomorphological dynamics, geotechnical engineering, geospatial analysis, and landscape architecture. The overall goals of the project are to understand processes driving change in coastal habitats, and to contribute to engineering solutions that increase the resilience of those habitats for the benefit of both society and nature. This represents the next phase of an ongoing research program supported by the Army Corps of Engineers that considers beneficial use of sediments, replanting of vegetation, and other restoration techniques to achieve success over large spatial scales and the long-term. The postdoc will conduct independent research while also coordinating research and project development activity with internal collaborators and outside partners. The position will be based at the University of Florida’s main campus in Gainesville, with frequent travel to field sites in northeast Florida. Research will focus on beach & dune habitats and/or coastal wetlands (i.e., salt marshes and mangroves).

A PhD in ecology or related field is required by the start date. The ideal applicant will have experience conducting research in coastal dune and/or wetlands. Excellent quantitative and communications skills should be evident through achievement in peer-reviewed publications and other professional outputs. Demonstrated success working both independently and as part of collaborative teams, particularly those involving partnerships with government, industry, NGOs, and other stakeholder groups, would be viewed favorably.

The postdoc will join the Altieri Lab in UF’s Environmental Engineering Sciences Department in the Engineering School of Sustainable Infrastructure and Environment (ESSIE) (https://faculty.eng.ufl.edu/ced/) and will be affiliated with UF’s Center for Coastal Solutions (https://ccs.eng.ufl.edu/). There will be opportunity for initiating new collaborative projects and further professional development through trainings, workshops, and other networking opportunities both within UF and with the broader external community. A competitive salary will be provided. The initial appointment will be for one year, and renewable for at least one additional year with satisfactory performance.

To apply, please submit (a) a cover letter that details your interest in the position, relevant experience and abilities, and goals for the position, (b) curriculum vitae, and (c) contact information for three professional references. Materials should be emailed as a single pdf to sdolan@ufl.edu. Inquiries about the position can be sent to andrew.altieri@essie.ufl.edu.
