About the Role
Wildlands Engineering is seeking an individual with a passion for environmental restoration to join our growing company in Asheville, NC or Knoxville, TN. Positions may be filled in one or both offices – please specify preferred location within your cover letter. This position will involve managing and leading projects with complex ecosystem restoration designs through the assessment, design, permitting, construction, and post-construction monitoring phases. Projects may include streams and wetland restoration; watershed and water quality improvements; dam removal and aquatic organism passage; hydrologic and hydraulic modeling; flood resiliency planning and design; and watershed planning and retrofit stormwater best management practices (BMPs). This is an important position that will be charged with major client management, leading design philosophy, overseeing project budgets and schedules, and working with in-house construction team as well as outside contractors on major project implementation.
Key Responsibilities
Manage technical design, budget, and schedule of complex water resource projects in various landscape settings.
Interpret ecological, geomorphic, and other site assessment data and set design goals.
Oversee successful implementation of ecosystem restoration through design, permitting, construction, and post-construction monitoring.
Effectively communicate and coordinate with team members, clients, and stakeholders.
Meet multiple deadlines with a willingness to react positively to challenges.
Lead a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers across offices on ecosystem restoration projects.
Qualifications
6 to 20+ years of progressive experience working with the ecologic and hydrologic processes important to ecosystem restoration as well as progressive design leadership and project management experience.
Undergraduate degree in engineering, fluvial geomorphology, geology, environmental science, or a related field is required. A graduate degree in one of these fields is desirable and may be considered as progressive experience.
Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) and/or the ability to obtain NC/TN licensure by reciprocity is preferred.
Experience managing large ecosystem restoration projects, stormwater, dam removal, or similar projects is preferred.
Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D.
Experience with hydraulic, hydrologic, and/or watershed modeling.
Experience preparing technical reports, construction plans and technical specifications, construction cost estimates, and construction administration.
Must have valid driver’s license.
Physical Demands
Ability to frequently walk over rough, uneven surfaces.
Ability to sustain periods of strenuous physical exertion.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Part of the job requirements and the physical demands are performed in outdoor weather conditions with frequent exposure to wet/humid conditions and extreme heat or cold. Other adverse factors may include exposure to ticks and poison ivy.
