About the Role

The Sierra Nevada Research Institute at UC Merced is seeking applicants for an academic coordinator position to implement a multifaceted STEM training and research program funded through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management Minority Serving Institution Partnership Program ( The $2.8 million, 3-year award focuses on fostering a sustainable and diverse environmental management science, technology, engineering, and mathematics workforce pipeline. The awards will also aid in promoting the development of a nationally engaged scientific and engineering workforce that will lead to future career pathways in the Office of Environmental Management complex for underrepresented groups.The academic coordinator will work with multiple program members, including three principal investigators in environmental engineering, life sciences and computer sciences, and stakeholders across campus, at national laboratories, and in the environmental consulting and regulatory space, to implement a STEM training and research program based on three key pillars:(1) STEM training activities,
(2) Course integration and program enhancement, and
(3) Institutional infrastructure support.A novel aspect of the program will be development of the Mesocosm for Environmental Research and Training (MERT) facility, an outdoor experimental facility to study and test sediment remediation strategies. With the assistance of the program principal investigators, the academic coordinator will be expected to implement a wide range of project activities, track project milestones and budget, prepare quarterly project reports, and lead regular program meetings.


Basic qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental management, or a related field
• 2-3 years experience with project and/or program management
• Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing

Additional qualifications

The candidate should have demonstrable experience in STEM outreach, course development, or leadership development.

Preferred qualifications

• Graduate degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental management, or a related field
• Advanced experience (>4 years) with project or program management
• Previous STEM outreach with underrepresented groups
